Ministries

St. Lawrence Martyr is an active, welcoming church. This is thanks, in large part, to the laypersons who participate in the various ministries of our Parish. We hope you will consider joining one of these valuable ministries.

Liturgical Ministries

Altar Servers:

In the words of Blessed John Paul II, "The altar server occupies a privileged place in the liturgical celebration." They serve in various capacities, as crucifers, thurifers, and acolytes during liturgical celebrations. Only the ministries of the presider (priest) and deacon have a longer history and a place closer to the altar during the celebration of the Eucharist. Apart from their specific duties, their reverence and the way they serve at the altar helps to create an atmosphere of worship for everyone at Mass.

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion:

These ministers are appointed for a given parish community to aid in the distribution of Holy Communion at Mass and to the sick and homebound when ordinary ministers of Holy Communion are unavailable.

Rick Bippus: 410-551-3432, RBippus@aol.com

Lectors:

Lectors fulfill their ministerial role during the celebration of the Liturgy of the Word at Eucharist and other sacramental celebrations. The proclamation of the Word of God is truly a ministry in the Church. Lectors bring the living Word of God to the liturgical assembly. In and through them, God speaks to the gathered faithful. The ministry of the Word, therefore, is treated seriously and with great dignity. The Word of God is not merely read during the liturgy. It is proclaimed. Effective proclamation involves the delivery of the message with clarity, conviction and appropriate pace. Proclamation is a special ministry which presupposes faith and also rouses faith in those who hear the Word proclaimed.

Liturgical Committee

The Liturgy Committee promotes, encourages, and facilitates a more full and active participation by the gathered assembly in the celebration of the Liturgy. To fulfill their role, the Liturgy Committee collaborates with the Pastor, Parochial Vicar, the Parish Council and other parish personnel and committees. It develops and establishes objectives to realize and accomplish parish, archdiocesan, and ecclesiastical goals and norms in the area of the Eucharist and other forms of parish worship.

Music Ministers:

Choir directors, vocalists, cantors, organists, and other musicians enhance our worship at Eucharist by leading the assembly in song. They add beauty and solemnity to the liturgy and assist and encourage the singing of the whole assembly.

Sacramental Preparation/Religious Education:

Catechetical Ministry provides on-going faith formation for baptized children and teens and prepares them for the Sacraments of Reconciliation, Holy Eucharist, and Confirmation. Therefore, St. Lawrence Martyr Parish provides faith formation through its Religious Education Program, serving children from pre-school through 8th grade, meeting on Sundays, including preparation for First Reconciliation and First Communion.

Life Teen:

Jojo Nad: 410-799-7291, youthministryslm@gmail.com

Adult Faith Formation/RCIA:

Christian faith formation does not end with adolescence. Ongoing adult faith formation is essential, if the Mystery of God, the Person of Christ, and the power of the Gospel is to be known and lived by all. Adult faith formation includes RCIA and topical classes and lectures for adults throughout the year.

Other services are as follows: spiritual support, visitation to homebound/hospital, driving homebound Parishioners to necessary appointments, and adoption of various nursing homes or hospice patients in order to visit those who would otherwise have no visitors.

Knights of Columbus:

The Knights of Columbus is the world's largest Catholic fraternal service organization. In 1998, a Knights of Columbus Council was formed in our parish. The Council, No. 12180, was also named after the first Trinitarian Pastor of the parish, Father Bernard Harding, OSST. The local council is actively involved in many pro-life, spiritual, civic, and parochial activities. It meets on the first and third Thursdays of each month in our Social Hall.

Poor Box Donations:

Saint Lawrence Martyr Parish is committed to assisting the poor within its parish boundaries and locally. Each week, Parishioners make donations for the poor and disadvantaged in the poor boxes in the rear of the church. We have a committee which screens requests for help to ensure that the requestors are in genuine need and the extent of the aid they require. Requests for aid are normally funneled to the rectory and the requests are immediately referred to the screening committee.

Prayer Ministry:

This ministry gathers once a month in person and is also connected constantly via an email list. On a daily basis, they pray for all of the parishioners' requests, both known and unknown. During their monthly meeting, they also engage in faith sharing on the Sunday readings. In a non-judgmental and confidential atmosphere, they share what God has been doing in their lives.

Sister Parish Group:

A “hermanamiento” or “sister” linkage was created in 2002 between St. Lawrence Martyr Parish, Jessup, Maryland and Santisima Trinidad (Holy Trinity) Parish, Sucre, Bolivia. The Sister Parish Group sustains this spiritual and material partnership. It raises funds annually to support the parish in Sucre, as well as to support an extensive after-school program at the parish in Sucre. At times, members of the group have traveled to Sucre, at their own expense, to donate their time, labor, and love, strengthening the already strong bond between the two parishes, both of which are both staffed by Trinitarians.

TLC (The Lasting Connection):

Meeting weekly at St. Lawrence Marty Parish Hall, this ministry provides for the social interaction of our senior citizens. In this ecumenical group, lectures, activities, trips, and a monthly meal are provided in a safe, caring, and enriching environment.

Valerie Magnuson: 410-799-7790, val@saintlawrencemartyr.org

Trinitarian Third Order:

From the very beginning of the Trinitarian Order, lay persons have been part of the family. By their lay and public nature, they incarnate the charism of St. John de Matha in the world in a variety of ways: ministering to the poor, the sick, and the marginalized. They consecrate themselves in a special way to the Most Holy Trinity, vowing simplicity, chastity, and obedience in accord with their state of life. The local chapter of the Third Order meets on the second and fourth Saturday of each month for a breakfast meeting. Their ministry includes cooking and serving a meal at a local homeless prevention support center.
